Broadening Participation of Minority-serving Institutions in Life STEM
(BP-MSI) – More than a Workshop!
The QEM/MERA Broadening Participation of MSIs in Life STEM (BP-MSI Life STEM) initiative is a movement engaging minority-serving institutions (MSIs) that are committed to developing and sharing effective models of intervention focused on broadening participation of under-represented minority students in STEM fields, particularly in life science and bioscience. The overall objective of this movement is to increase the number of competitive grant proposals from MSIs to the NSF Life STEM Programs. The JUNE 2017 workshop series was just one effort in a set of strategies that QEM and MERA designed to develop a powerful network of MSIs that are promoting collaborative and interdisciplinary research, learning about funding opportunities, and building their internal as well as external capacity in STEM education. QEM and MERA are committed to providing institutional teams participating in the workshops with ongoing resources and technical assistance to develop their Life STEM proposals.
WORKSHOP SERIES: The workshops were hosted by BP-MSI Life STEM's three regional partners: Xavier University of Louisiana, Spelman College, and Rutgers University-Newark. Details of each workshop can be found here.
LISTSERV: To facilitate fulfillment of our stated purpose and objectives, we have created a listserv for LifeSTEM workshop participants. We will use the listserv to provide access to resources and information that will support and enhance institutional teams' capacity to develop competitive proposals. We plan to deliver new information via the listserv as well as the project website on a weekly basis.
WEBINARS: QEM and MERA launched a Life STEM Webinar series in August 2017, with continued support from the National Science Foundation (DRL-1738128). The webinars support regional workshop participants’ efforts to prepare and submit competitive Life STEM proposals. Workshop speaker and project consultant, Dr. Odis Johnson, Jr., serves as a national expert for the webinar series.
